Adhil Bakeer Markar

Adhil Bakeer Markar was born on 11th of March 1990. He is the Fourth son of Imthiaz Bakeer Markar.

Adhil Bakeer Markar obtained his primary education at Royal College Colombo and went on to complete his advanced level education at Asian International School, Colombo.

In 2011 he received his Diplomas in International Relations and Intellectual Property Law from the Bandaranaike Centre for International Studies and He successfully completed his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London in 2013. There after he entered the Sri Lanka Law College where he passed out as an Attorney-at-law. Adhil Bakeer Markar was awarded the prestigious Chevening Scholarship and was selected to pursue his MSc in Comparative Politics at the London School of Economics and Political Science, London in September 2016. At the age of 26, a month into his MSc programme, Adhil Bakeer Markar left this world on the 12th of October 2016, in London.

Adhil Bakeer Markar was acclaimed for his outstanding achievements and humility. He was selected as one of the two official youth delegates to represent Sri Lanka at the 68th United Nations General Assembly in New York 2013. He was selected out of more than 500 young leaders across the island following a competitive interview process, where he had the privilege of delivering the national statement on behalf of the youth of Sri Lanka.

Adhil has been involved in many activities concerning youth in Sri Lanka since his young days. He was President of the Rotaract club of Colombo North during 2011/2012 and was also the club’s International Understanding Director the year before. The club was adjudged as the most outstanding club of the year under his Presidency in Sri Lanka, recognizing the diverse nature of projects carried out. He was also the Founder Secretary-General of the Youth Model United Nations, 2011, which brought together 250 youth across Sri Lanka to a common platform to discuss issues of global concern. This initiative was endorsed by the United Nations, The Ministry of Higher Education Sri Lanka and the United States Embassy in Sri Lanka.

Adhil Bakeer Markar was a Member of the International Youth Task Force for the World Conference on Youth 2014. He was part of the organizing committee comprising of 20 young global leaders from different continents, which was endorsed by the United Nations and the Government of Sri Lanka. Adhil Bakeer Markar has represented Sri Lanka on multiple global platforms including at the Future World Leaders Summit, Washington DC in 2009. He has also captained the under 11, 17 and 19 cricket teams of the respective schools he attended and was elected as the Most Popular International Schoolboy Cricketer for the year 2009 by Bata and the Sunday Times.

Adhil Bakeer Markar was appointed to the Board of Directors of the National Youth Services Council of Sri Lanka by the Honourable Prime Minister in 2015. Following his untimely demise, his family and friends have formed the Adhil Bakeer Markar Foundation to continue to the work and the vision he has left behind.
